IT communications at IU enjoy fruitful awards season

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Sept. 8, 2008

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Each year, technical communications organizations gather to recognize outstanding work in the field. This year, numerous Indiana University information technology (IT) communicators have been honored by their peers.

Four IU communications products will be recognized at the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Special Interest Group on University and College Computing Services (SIGUCCS) annual conference, October 19-22 in Portland, Oregon. Three of these were awarded best of category.

The Society for Technical Communication (STC) also presented a Distinguished Award, an International Award of Merit, and three Awards of Excellence to IU communicators earlier this year.

SIGUCCS awards

SIGUCCS Best of Category award winners include: "Celebrating the Progress, Continuing the Journey," a booklet produced by the University Information Technology Services (UITS) Communications Office; the University Information Policy Office (UIPO) home page; and the IU News Room. UITS IT Training and Education earned an Award of Excellence in the Printed Instructional Classroom Materials category for the workshop materials "Podcasting: The Basics (Audacity)."

"Celebrating the Progress, Continuing the Journey" chronicles ten years of IU IT progress, commemorating the success of IU's first Information Technology Strategic Plan and highlighting the kick-off of the second. Jan R. Holloway and Maria Morris of the UITS Communications Office created the booklet in preparation for the Information Technology Strategic Plan 2 launch event in the spring. The booklet won Best of Category in General Service Promotional Materials.

The UIPO home page is the online landing place for information policy development, education, and incident response at Indiana University. The site, coordinated by team members Scott Wilson and Merri Beth Lavagnino, won Best of Category in Computing Services Public Web Site.

The IU News Room—a source of news from around IU and a product of the Office of University Communications within the Office of the Vice President for Public Affairs and Government Relations (Larry McIntyre, Susan Williams, Nicole Roales, Rebecca Salerno, Greg Polit)—won Best of Category in Electronic Computing Newsletter.

"Podcasting: The Basics (Audacity)," is one of a series of workshops for IU podcast producers. The workshop, developed by UITS IT Training and Education, won an Award of Excellence for Printed Instructional Classroom Materials.
