Gosney appointed to teaching and learning position with UITS

INDIANAPOLIS -- John Gosney has been appointed as faculty liaison for the Teaching and Learning Information Technology division of University Information Technology Services (UITS).

As faculty liaison within UITS' Academic and Faculty Services, Gosney will work with faculty from across Indiana University to explore and advocate the best use of technology to enhance teaching and learning. Also working closely with the campus centers for teaching and learning, he will focus on helping to bridge the frequently occurring gap between innovative pedagogy and the technology used to support and facilitate it, with a major focus on providing support for Oncourse CL, the integrative learning application ePortfolio, as well as other UITS-related initiatives.

Gosney comes to his new position having served since 2000 as director of information technology for the IU School of Dentistry. Previously, Gosney worked as an application developer for the dental school, where he developed web-based applications to facilitate the school's problem-based learning curriculum.

Gosney will continue to serve as an adjunct faculty member on the IUPUI campus, in both the departments of English and American Studies, where he teaches literature and cultural study courses. He is the author of more than a dozen books on technology-related matters, including JavaScript Professional Projects (with Paul A. Hatcher); ASP Programming for the Absolute Beginner; Web-Enable Your Small Business in a Weekend; and Beyond Reality: a Guide to Alternate Reality Gaming. Moreover, he is the author of market analysis and research reports on supercomputing and artificial intelligence.

"As an adjunct faculty member, author, and former developer, John brings to this position just the right blend of technical expertise and faculty experience," said Anastasia Morrone, associate dean for teaching and learning information technologies. "John is especially effective in describing how the latest technology can be used to support pedagogical goals."

Garland Elmore, deputy CIO and dean for IT at IUPUI, echoes Morrone's statements. "John has already proven himself to be an advocate for faculty and faculty projects that require the use of Oncourse CL and ePortfolio. We look forward to his many contributions as he works with faculty to infuse effective and innovative uses of instructional technology in teaching and learning and to encourage their involvement in IT-related decisions."

Gosney earned a bachelor's degree in technical writing and psychobiology from Purdue University and a master's in English from Butler University.
